St Florent reverberates with Porto Latino!

Porto Latino 2013 014

Just hearing the name prepares you to dream,  doesn’t it? Arriving in time to take a quick visit of the coastal town of St Florent (north of the island), which I hadn’t been to for a while, I admit – was on the agenda, and after viewing many of the changes that had taken place too – it’s flourishing and extremely welcoming. Expansion, structure and tuneful hues having taken over, one can very easily foresee or extend a definite halt. Wandering around admiring the quaint little streets, filled with summer tones and often tiny boutiques, opening out onto delightfully picturesque squares, where cafés invite you to repose for a while, filled with tanned, ‘sunhatted’ and ‘sunglassed’ visitors, requiring short or long spells of rest and shade, and quite regularly distinguished by the omnipre...

The Melting Pot of International Guitarists, Patrimonio – 24th edition on its way ..

Affiche2013So true too, this festival started out in 1990 from sheer passion, where Guy Maestracci and Jean-Bernard Gilormini believed in a dream, a dream to come true, gaining weight over the years to become an internationally marked date for guitarists and followers; be it with jazz, blues or flamenco.

Just so as you realise who I am are referring to here: Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Gilberto Gil, Lucky Peterson, Taj Mahal, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Tommy Emmanuel, Joe Cocker, John Butler Trio, George Benson, Robert Plant, Sean Lennon, Keziah Jones, Marcus Miller, Asaf Avidan, Alan Parson’s Project, Pat McManus Band, Luz Casal and Melody Gardot … impossible to name them all, but, you’ve certainly captured the picture here, I’d say.

Set in an outdoor theatre, under the stars, in th...

Calvi On The Rocks anyone? with a very promising 11th edition

Calvi On The Rocks

Upon reading what they have managed to develop for their 11th edition, I must admit I was surprised, and I’ll explain why too. Imagine rallying the following, all in one event:

Mayer Hawthorne, Trentemoller, Mark Ronson, and Jamie Lidell … the remaining guests you may discover yourselves!

An open air rock/electro festival that willingly takes over the town and beaches during five days of vibrant music – that’s what Calvi On The Rocks is about. For the short story, it was in 1268 that the noble Giovaninello de Loreto decided to build the citadelle, overlooking the port – and named it Calvi.

I suppose you could say, it’s one of the best ways of starting off the holidays too, just when the season is ready to take full swing...

Historic moments! the waiting and the arrival of the Tour de France 2013, 2nd stage Bastia/Ajaccio

tour de france 2 tour de france 1 Tour de France

Under a sweltering sun, our wait started. We were there to see those tireless, courageous cyclists arrive from Bastia after 156km, where 27 year old Jan Bakelants was the first to sprint to the finishing line! If you’d like to read all about the tour, just go to my previous article: bit.ly/1b0aox3 .

I wouldn’t have missed this for anything, living on this island and in Ajaccio! I cannot relate too much or too strongly as regards the excitement and pride deeply sensed throughout Corsica .. they had been planning it for the past two years too, and when the actual moment is finally there, within reach, where you are standing and watching them arrive, you realise it was beyond your expectations, through speed, colour and the absolute professional touch.  They just flew by...

Back Camera

The rising excitement has indeed been experienced, especially over recent weeks, now it’s nearer and nearer for this years Tour de France Cycling, where Corsica will be actually participating for the first time in its history! I wonder if you can imagine what this represents for this small island too – yes, economic repercussions of course, and in every way, then again, this is the biggest cycling event in the world today, and this year will see 21 stages, and will include a total distance of 3,403km, and if I’ve correctly counted, there will be 22 teams, and 126 cyclists from 14 countries …

Corsica will be hosting the start of the race, and the first three stages – concerned are the towns of: Porto-Vecchio, Bastia, Ajaccio, and Calvi.
On Thursday June 27th, presentations of the teams wi...
