Mirabeau’s speech, at the National Assembly and meaningful words ..

Storia di Corsica to translate‘I admit that my youth was defiled by participating in the conquest of Corsica; but, I believe to be even more obliged to repair what my reason reproaches as an injustice to this generous people. A proclamation pronounced the death penalty against Corsicans who defended their homes, and for which the love of freedom had them flee. I ask you, would it be your justice and the kindness of the king that would keep them away from their country and punish by death their return to their homeland ?’

Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de Mirabeau (1749-1791)
