Bastia Tempi Fà l'eau bisAlthough the podesta and annalist Giovani Banchero boasted about the abundance of fountains in Bastia and the quality of their water, over the XIX century the shortage during the summer season often struck; and this obliged the municipality to look into the matter. In 1833, they decide to repair the Ficaghjola fountain. Bastia started to feel the effects of drought at the beginning of March, 1835. This is why it was forbidden to draw from the public fountains, other than for domestic use. The bakers, builders and sailors had to go to Ficaghjola or Mulinu Biancu. In August 1844, the problem with pipelines for several fountains of the town had arrived to a crucial point. And in 1851, Bastia (with a population that had almost doubled) enquired about possible new sources. Drinking water was detected in the upper part of the Favalelli property, the current Theatre square.
